Add a Rug to the Dining Room

Placing a rug under both the dining room table and chairs is the perfect way to ground a space. A rug visually defines the dining area, especially in open-concept homes. It makes the table feel intentional and “finished” rather than floating. Bonus: rugs also help protect your floors and reduce noise from chairs.

Laurie also emphasized that the rug size is important. “It has to be the right-sized rug,” she says. “You want to make sure the chairs are on the rug, so it has to be big enough to fill all of the furniture” Make sure that the rug is big enough so the chairs cover the rug when they are pushed in.

Use Barstools to Elevate Countertops

Barstools are an easy way to add style and function to a kitchen or island countertop. Barstools not only add seating, but they make the space feel lived-in. They also offer an opportunity to introduce texture, color, contrast, and personality into your design.

Laurie recommends using three to four barstools if space allows. The right number of barstools helps the space feel balanced. Laurie explains that “If it only has two, it just seems a little sparse.” Having barstools also makes the space more inviting as it encourages gathering whether it be through morning coffee or entertaining guests.

Laurie Purcell’s thoughtful touches can completely transform a space. With a suitable-sized rug in the dining room and a set of barstools, the home can start to feel more like you! Sometimes, the little things really do make the biggest difference.
