Grand Valley Hospitals and Their Unique Specializations: Who Does What Best

Moving can be stressful but knowing if the area has a good medical care can add to the stress.

Here in the Grand Valley we have several options for health care, but with so many options available, understanding what makes each hospital unique can help you make an informed choice about your healthcare before an emergency ever occurs.

Intermountain Health St. Mary’s Regional Hospital (St. Mary’s Medical Center)

2635 N 7th St, Grand Junction, CO 81501

This medical center in Grand Junction is the largest medical center between Denver and Salt Lake City. With 440 beds, it is the only Cancer Center in the region with several accreditations which could be found on their website. Also offered are 24/7 emergency and trauma services, birthing centers, imaging, a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), cardiac and vascular care, as well as surgical specialties including open-heart, brain, and spine surgery. It also has a helipad/air transport support for critical patients. St. Mary’s is a Level II trauma center (Level V being the hospital with the least amount of resources available) and has high safety ratings.

Community Hospital

This Level III trauma center in Grand Junction is partnered with an award-winning Grand Valley Oncology group. With 60 beds, some of the facilities they have are advanced pulmonary care and rehabilitation, surgical care, cardiac rehabilitation, imaging (radiology), nutrition, and pediatric therapy. They have both inpatient and outpatient surgery. They have several locations and their website allows you to filter by specialty, with several locations located in Fruita.

This offers an after-hours clinic. Referred to as “DOCS on call” this is for non-urgent but after hour care. It is physician owned and serves over 55,000 patients in Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. They provide outpatient care, but do not have a full hospital nor do they offer surgeries. If inpatient hospitalization is needed, it is best to go to a different hospital. PCP prioritizes continuity of care (meaning having the same provider, long term). The services they provide are nutritional services, diagnostic services, physical therapy, behavioral health, and family-medicine and pediatric care covering all ages from children to seniors.

Family Health West

This medical center is in Fruita and is a level IV emergency room. FHW hospital has 25 beds and has services such as orthopedics, podiatry, psychological evaluation, arthritis, pain management, and surgery. This is the only nonprofit health care organization in Western Colorado. FHW emphasizes local, community-rooted healthcare.
